Make/shift was part of the Curious festival 2017, a collaboration between a selected group of musicians from Guildhall School of Music & Drama and MA Graphic Communication Design students from Central Saint Martins.
The event took place at the Barbican Museum in London.
Overall theme: the structures we create mediate our relationship with the world - whether it's the physical constructions we make or t he frameworks through which we think and feel. For millennia, we have individually or collectively created structures to protect us, offer refuge and enable us to survive. Make/Shift proposes to turn to artistic expression to interpret, reflect or re-imagine the world. Do we take refuge from the contemporary world, do we feel a need to hide? or is imperative that we face what is there?
Personal approach: is something fragile actually weak? or can it be strong, as it suggests an ability to change? We are all part of various communities, sharing similar values or beliefs. Communities themselves rise, vanish and change everyday…but how do we position ourselves within them? Do we communicate our values? What are they anyway?
I worked in cooperation with Katie McDonald on this piece.
